Hot Tip of the Month- February 2005: "Getting New Bikes"
I've addressed this subject in the past; it's that time for many facilities. Your bikes are shot, member complaints are on the rise, and you believe that the solution is new bikes; that's the shot in the arm that your facility needs, and needs badly. Consider the reasons your current bikes look and feel the way they do. They are rusty because they weren't taken care of properly. You CANNOT rely on your members to keep your bikes clean. Hey, maybe if the bike were aluminum, we wouldn't have bikes that looked so horrible. WRONG, Any and all bikes will still have their fair share of steel components on the bike, regardless of the material in the frame. Second, new bikes will keep the repair costs down. If your new bikes aren't prepped correctly when they arrive, in 6 months or a year when its time to do an adjustment or a repair, the nightmare could start all over again. Whether your bikes are old or new, it's NEVER too soon to begin a proactive maintenance program. Take care of your bikes and your members will be happy.
