Hot Tip of the Month- March 2005: "Triple Link Pedals"
The Triple Link pedal by Nautilus/Schwinn is an amazing addition to any indoor
bike for many reasons. It is the ONLY pedal that successfully accommodates three
different formats for shoes used during indoor cycling. First, it has a side
that works for LOOK cleats, the roadie herd. Second, it works well with SPD
formatted shoes, probably the most common for new generation cyclists. And last,
with its included adapter, it works with a normal athletic shoe, common among
newbie’s trying indoor cycling for the first time. The adapters will usually
outlast the pedal. The typical lifespan of a Triple Link pedal is 1-2 years.
When installing the pedal it’s recommended to pre-stretch the tension
plates on the LOOK side and also to apply a couple of drops of Tri-Flow to any
hardware associated with future tension plate adjustments. There are other options
for a multi format pedal, but only with the SPD, Athletic shoe formats. With
many clients or riders continuing to use a LOOK formatted shoe, it’s always
best to accommodate everyone. Changing your pedals and eliminating formats,
in my experience causes alienation. Only an opinion, but it is based on experience.
