Hot Tip of the Month- April 2003: "Blown Flywheel
Indicators"
Flywheel bearings are one of the many things on your bikes that will eventually
have to be replaced. The big question is: How do you tell if they need to be
replaced? One of the easiest ways to check is looking for “side to side
play’. While the flywheel is motionless; gab the top and bottom of the
flywheel and check for play. This typically means that the bearing is blown.
Another no-brainer is the “Feel” of the flywheel as it is in motion.
If you get a gravel-like feel while pedaling, it may also be an indicator of
blown flywheel bearings. Some bikes have been shipped out of the factory with
little or no grease in the bearings. All of these scenarios are correctable.
If you have no idea how to accomplish these tasks, check out our manuals. They
were put together to make difficult jobs like this a little easier.
