Hot Tip of the Month- June 2005: "Cultivating New
Students"
Summers here and in some clubs the numbers go up while in others, they may
drop. I teach at Golds Gym in Venice California. Sometimes there’s so
much going on in this club that new members interested in taking a Spinning
class are either ignored or overlooked. It’s sometimes very intimidating
for a new member to walk and get on the bike for his or her first class. I took
the idea to our program director about having an open invitation for new members
interested in spinning to come on Sundays at 4pm. They are invited to show up
a little early and we do proper bike set up and give them some basic “getting
started” type information. Most of the prime time classes fill up fast
and there is so much going on, it’s sometimes hard to even give a moment
of attention to the new person. Sometimes we have a very small window of opportunity
to get the new person in and on the bike. If we blow it, we lose valuable newbie’s,
who are the future of the activity we love so much.
