Hot Tip of the Month- October 2004: "Buying a bike
for home use."
You love to take classes or do the activity. But the planets aren’t aligned
and for whatever reason you’ve been missing out. You make a decision to
get a bike for your home. Now comes the hard part. How do decide what to buy.
First off, consider buying a used bike. E-bay, Craigslist; there are many sources.
The deal with used bikes is generally the condition. If the bike has been in
a gym and they haven’t taken care of them, the last thing you want is
to adopt a bike with problems. If you buy from a retail store and all they do
take em’ out of the box and slam em’ together, that’s not
good either. It’s always best to buy a new bike from a company that at
the least, knows what indoor cycling is. And especially the mechanic who works
on the equipment, if a mechanic doesn’t do classes, or isn’t familiar
with how the bike is SUPPOSED to feel, how can his abilities satisfy you in
the future when your bike needs attention? If you buy used, from a fitness equipment
company, be sure they do more than put a “polish” on the bike. This
means, they buy cheap make the bike “look good” and jack up the
price. If they tell you in detail whats been done to “refurb” the
bike that’s always a good sign. Be careful and take your time making your
decision.
