Hot Tip of the Month- November 2007: “Triple Link
Pedal Issues”
The Schwinn Triple Link pedal is one of the most popular pedals in indoor cycling
because it is the only pedal accommodates both SPD & LOOK cleats as well
as athletic shoes with the supplied adapter baskets. I’ve noticed several
issues that I would like to share with everyone. The pivot points on both the
SPD tension plate and the LOOK tension plate have loosened and backed out of
the pedal body after just a few months use. The pivot hardware acts as sort
of a hinge for the plates when you enter or exit the cleat docks. When the hardware
backs out of the pedal body; you immediately lose the ability to stay connected.
This can be corrected by simply loosening the tension and screwing the hardware
back into the pedal body. The SPD hinge size is 2.5mm and the LOOK hinge is
a TORX fitting; not sure of that size; take a pedal with you to the hardware
store to ensure a correct size and fit.TORX screwdrivers or Screwdriver bits
can be found at most sizable hardware stores. I’ve also noticed that if
you over tighten the 3mm tension regulator hardware on the LOOK side you can
snap the plate in half that the tension screw threads into. When this happens;
you loose ALL tension on the pedal and the pedal must be replaced. Happy Holidays
to all : )
